Can you shower with gold plated jewelry?

Short answer: it is safest to take gold plated jewelry off before you shower. Gold itself does not rust or corrode, but the plating layer is extremely thin. At Hengdian (HD) Jewelry our own standard is 18K gold plating at 0.1-0.3 micron over a brass base. Repeated exposure to hot water, soap, shampoo, and conditioner gradually speeds up wear on that thin layer. One accidental rinse will not ruin a piece, but making the shower part of your daily wear is the fastest way to shorten its life.
Why showering is hard on gold plating
A shower combines three things that thin plating does not like: heat, moisture, and chemicals. None of them destroys jewelry in a single use, but together they add up faster than most people expect.
Hot water
Warm water softens and opens the microscopic surface, letting soaps and residues settle into the finish.
Soap & shampoo
Surfactants, sulfates, and oils in washes weaken the bond between the gold layer and the brass base.
Friction & rub
Washing, lathering, and wet-slip add mechanical friction that scrapes the plating in high-contact spots.
What you will notice over time
If gold plated jewelry is worn in the shower day after day, the changes are gradual but visible:
- The bright gold tone fades to a lighter, uneven, or patchy shade.
- In high-friction areas the brass base may begin to show through.
- Pieces look tired and lose their shine well before dry-stored pieces do.
How to keep gold plated jewelry looking its best
- Remove rings, bracelets, and necklaces before showering, bathing, and swimming.
- Put jewelry on after lotion, perfume, and hair products have dried.
- Pat the piece dry with a soft cloth if it does get wet.
- Store in a dry pouch; keep it out of humid bathrooms.
- Clean only with a soft dry or slightly damp cloth - skip harsh cleaners and ultrasonic machines.

Frequently asked questions
Can I swim with gold plated jewelry?
Chlorinated pools and salt water are harsher than shower water. Remove jewelry before swimming to protect the plating.
Is it okay to wash my hands with it on?
Brief hand washing is low risk, but dry the piece afterward. Repeated wetting still adds up over time.
How do I clean gold plated jewelry safely?
Use a soft dry or slightly damp cloth only. Avoid jewelry cleaners, polishing cloths, and ultrasonic machines.
Does Hengdian offer thicker plating?
Yes. Custom plating thickness is available on request for wholesale and OEM/ODM orders. Request a quote.
