Why Sleeping in Jewelry Shortens Plating Life

Four things happen while you sleep:

  • Friction. Rings, bracelets, and necklaces rub against sheets, pillows, and nightwear. Over time this polishes away the thin gold layer.
  • Pressure. Body weight against rings or earring posts can bend settings, loosen stones, and stress clasps.
  • Sweat and oils. Skin stays in contact with the metal for hours, trapping salts and acids that dull the finish.
  • Tangling. Chains can knot and kink, while earrings may catch on fabric and pull.

Taking jewelry off before bed is one of the simplest ways to extend its life.

At Hengdian (HD) Jewelry, our 18K gold plating is applied at 0.1–0.3 micron over polished brass. This is our own production standard, not a universal industry specification. For markets where pieces are worn around the clock, custom plating thickness is available on request.
