Can You Wear Gold Plated Jewelry to the Beach?
A day at the beach is hard on a thin gold layer. Salt water, wet sand, and sunscreen all work against 18K gold plating. You can wear pieces for a beach walk or photos, but we recommend taking them off before swimming or applying sunscreen.
What the Beach Does to the Plating
Three forces at the shore wear a thin gold layer faster than everyday use:
- Salt water. Chloride in seawater speeds up oxidation of any brass exposed through microscopic scratches and leaves a dull film on the surface.
- Sand. Beach sand is abrasive. A single grain dragged across the skin can scratch the 0.1–0.3 micron layer and dull the shine.
- Sunscreen and oils. SPF creams and tanning oils leave a film that reacts with the plating and is hard to rinse off with sea water.
How Our Plating Is Built
At Hengdian (HD) Jewelry, our 18K gold plating is applied at 0.1–0.3 micron over polished brass. This is our own production standard, not a universal industry specification, so the layer is tuned for daily wear rather than constant salt and sand. For customers who need extra resilience, custom plating thickness is available on request.
Our factory in Haifeng, Shanwei, Guangdong runs five production lines across fourteen controlled processes. Every piece is rechecked at our Guangzhou warehouse before shipment. Products are lead-free, and nickel release stays within REACH limits.
Smart Beach Habits
Take It Off First
Remove rings, bracelets, and necklaces before swimming, and before applying sunscreen or tanning oil.
Rinse With Fresh Water
If pieces get splashed, rinse them with clean fresh water and pat dry as soon as you can.
Store in the OPP Pouch
Keep them in the standard OPP pouch so sand and saltwater do not sit against the metal between wears.

Quick FAQs
Will one swim in the sea ruin gold plated jewelry?
No. A single quick dip causes minimal wear, but repeated swimming without removing it will dull the finish faster than normal use.
Can I wear it for beach photos?
Yes. For photos and a walk, keep it on, but take it off before you go in the water or put on sunscreen.
Does sunscreen affect the plating?
Sunscreen and oils leave a film that can dull the surface; wipe pieces with a soft cloth after a beach day.
