18K gold plated vs gold vermeil: what's the difference?

When sourcing gold-tone jewelry, two labels appear constantly: 18K gold plated and gold vermeil. They look alike in the case but rest on very different metal foundations. This guide explains what each means, how they compare, and which fits your brand or stock.

What 18K gold plated jewelry is

18K gold plated jewelry starts with a base metal (usually brass) that receives a thin, even 18K gold layer by electroplating. At Hengdian (HD) Jewelry our own plating standard is 0.1-0.3 micron over brass, our house standard rather than a generic rule, and we can adjust thickness on request. The result is light, affordable, and close to solid gold, which is why it leads fashion and wholesale catalogs. Browse our in-stock collection.

What gold vermeil is

Gold vermeil (ver-may) is a legally defined category. Under U.S. FTC rules it must use a sterling silver (925) base, gold of at least 10 karat (commonly 14K or 18K), and a minimum gold layer of 2.5 microns. Because the core is precious silver rather than brass, vermeil costs more and is sold as a step above ordinary plating, yet still far below solid gold.

Durability and care

Both need the same care: keep them dry, away from perfume and sweat, and store in a soft pouch. The thicker vermeil layer resists wear a little longer, but neither is solid gold nor waterproof. Our 18K gold plated pieces suit everyday fashion rotation and easy restocking from a 40,000+ in-stock catalog with 500+ new designs monthly.

Which should a buyer or brand choose?

Choose 18K gold plated when price, variety, and fast restock matter most, ideal for boutiques and private-label lines. Choose vermeil when the silver core and thicker layer justify a higher retail price and a precious-metal story. Many brands stock both tiers. As a Shanwei, Guangdong manufacturer with our own factory (5 lines, 14 in-house processes, designs in 7 days), Hengdian (HD) Jewelry specializes in 18K gold plated fashion jewelry over brass, REACH-compliant and lead-free, nickel controlled to REACH limits. See our factory and certifications. Custom plating thickness is available on request; items ship in OPP bags with 1V1 service.

Quick answers

Is gold vermeil real gold?

The outer layer is real gold, but the body is sterling silver, not solid gold throughout.

Is 18K gold plated jewelry hypoallergenic?

The brass base is covered by gold; plating is lead-free and nickel is controlled to REACH limits, though very sensitive skin should patch-test first.

Can I request thicker plating?

Yes. Custom plating thickness is available on request for bulk orders. Send an inquiry to discuss specs.

Which is better for resale?

It depends on your customer: plated is volume-friendly, vermeil supports a premium line. Many sellers carry both.
