How to Prevent Gold Plated Jewelry From Fading
Gold plated jewelry fades mainly because the thin gold layer is worn down by friction, moisture, sweat and chemicals. Fading is largely preventable: how you wear and store a piece matters far more than how often you wear it.
Wear It in the Right Order
Apply perfume, lotion, sunscreen and hairspray first, then put jewelry on last. These products carry alcohol, oils and acids that attack the plating. Remove jewelry at night before washing your hands, showering, swimming or exercising, since chlorine, salt water and sweat accelerate discoloration fastest.
Clean Gently and Dry Completely
Wipe each piece with a soft, dry microfiber cloth after wear. For a deeper clean, use lukewarm water with a drop of mild soap, rinse briefly and pat completely dry. Avoid paper towels, abrasive brushes, ultrasonic cleaners and strong chemicals, and never leave moisture in recesses or seams, where fading usually begins.
Store It So Metal Never Rubs Metal
Keep each item separate so pieces do not rub together; a soft pouch or lined box prevents the fine abrasion that slowly removes plating.
