What is the main difference between 18K gold plated brass and 925 sterling silver?
18K gold plated brass is plated; 925 sterling silver is solid. The gold-toned piece is a brass core finished with a thin 18-karat gold surface layer — at Hengdian (HD) Jewelry our standard plating thickness is 0.1-0.3 micron applied in our own factory. The silver piece, by contrast, is a homogeneous alloy of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals (usually copper), with the silver running through the whole item.
Why the construction matters for buyers
- Cost: plating avoids precious-metal material cost, so gold plated brass is the lower-cost line for a wide, fast-turning assortment.
- Repair: silver can be polished and reworked; worn plating is renewed by replating rather than polishing.
- Care: silver tarnishes but renews with a polish; plating keeps its colour until it thins at contact points.
