Which tarnishes faster — 18K gold plated or 925 sterling silver?
They age in different ways. Sterling silver tarnishes as the silver reacts with sulfur in the air, forming a dark film — but the metal itself does not disappear, and a quick polish restores the shine. Gold plating does not "tarnish" so much as gradually thin at high-contact points, and once the 0.1-0.3 micron layer wears through, the brass core can show.
What this means day to day
- Silver: darkens with air exposure; renews with occasional polishing. Renewable, but needs after-sale care communication.
- Gold plated: holds its colour longer with dry storage, but heavy wear eventually reveals the base. Keep pieces away from water and perfume.
