Can I wear 18K gold plated jewelry in water like silver?
We advise against it. Water, soap, and chlorine all speed up plating wear on gold plated pieces, because they attack the thin 0.1-0.3 micron gold layer at contact points. Silver tolerates water better, but it still tarnishes and benefits from drying afterward.
Simple care rules
- Gold plated: keep it dry. Remove before showering, swimming, and applying perfume; store in a pouch.
- Sterling silver: water-tolerant, but dry and polish periodically to control tarnish.
- Both: a soft dry cloth after wear extends the life of the finish far more than any cleaning product.
