Keep every piece dry, separate and sealed away from humid air: wipe it clean, let it dry fully, then store it in a soft pouch or lined compartment away from the bathroom. Moisture and air slowly reach the base metal under the thin gold layer, so storage decides how long a piece stays bright.
Why Storage Matters for Plated Jewelry
Gold plating is a genuine layer of 18K gold over a base metal such as brass, but it is far thinner than solid gold and not pore-free. Humidity and airborne compounds migrate through these microscopic pores and react with the base metal, showing up as dark spots or dull patches. The hours a piece spends unworn matter as much as the way it is worn.
Separate compartments keep plated pieces from scratching one another.
Five Storage Rules That Actually Work
1. Give each piece its own space
Loose pieces in one box scratch each other, and a deep scratch can expose the base metal. Use a compartment box or individual slots so jewelry never touches.
2. Wrap pieces in soft pouches
A soft flannel pouch slows moisture transfer, and anti-tarnish pouches or strips neutralize the airborne compounds that cause discoloration.
3. Pick a cool, dry spot
A bedroom drawer or lined box is ideal. The bathroom is the worst spot: steam and temperature swings speed up tarnish dramatically.
4. Add a desiccant to the box
A small silica gel sachet or anti-tarnish strip keeps local humidity low. Replace it every few months or when it changes color.
5. Store it clean, dry and sealed
Skin oils and perfume residue keep attacking the surface in storage, and sealing a damp piece in an airtight bag traps moisture against the plating. Wipe with a soft dry cloth, let it air-dry, then seal.
Individual pouches slow oxidation and stop tangling.
Storage Mistakes to Avoid
- Piling all pieces together in one tray
- Keeping jewelry on a bathroom shelf or windowsill
- Sealing pieces in plastic while they are still damp
- Resting jewelry on bare rubber or untreated wood
How We Store and Pack Stock Before Dispatch
Storage discipline should not end at the factory gate. At Hengdian (HD) Jewelry, every stock piece leaves our Guangzhou warehouse in an individual OPP bag after a second quality check, ready for retail display. Our plating line works to our own standard of 0.1-0.3 micron of 18K gold over brass - a house specification, not an industry-wide figure - and custom plating thickness is available on request.
Stock styles start at 6-12 pieces per design (codes beginning with HAI at 36 pieces); free samples of 5-7 pieces ship with freight prepaid by the buyer. Production runs through our own factory in Shanwei, Haifeng, with 5 lines and 14 in-house processes, backed by REACH and CE reports; nickel release stays within REACH limits and the material is lead-free.
Quick Storage FAQ
Can I keep gold plated jewelry in the bathroom?
No. Steam and humidity accelerate tarnish, so use a dry room instead.
Should gold plated jewelry be stored in plastic bags?
Only when the piece is completely dry; sealing in moisture does more harm than good.
Does storage really affect how long plating lasts?
Yes. Dry, separated storage slows the oxidation that dulls plated surfaces.
How do you pack wholesale orders?
Each piece is bagged individually in OPP after a second QC at our Guangzhou warehouse. See our product list for current stock.
